白小琦《巧克力英语》第八课:我的美国朋友

2016-07-08 来源: 巧克力英语 评论1条

Jack Newton was my classmate and a friend of mine. He was an engineer and the chairman of a board. He graduated from an engineering school and was good at fixing car engines or motors. Jack was a choke expert, and a choke was a car part. When you use a car or jeep during really cold days, you don’t only need a pair of gloves; you have to use the choke on your car or jeep.

Jack married Mary in 1986. So, we called them Mr. and Mrs. Newton. They just loved each other so much that they even wanted to die for each other. Jack and Mary lived on the bank of a lake not far away from New York City. Their house was very big. There were upstairs rooms and downstairs rooms. Every room was very good. There was a spear on the wall of their living room. In old times, a spear was a weapon, just as a gun of today. The wall around their house was low. It was just for good-looking. You might (may) find sardine, crab, eel and gar in the lake near their house. The lake was surrounded by a big golf course. The air was new and fresh, and the sky was clear. You could (can) even hear the wave from the lake. Near their house, there were a pool and many pine and fir trees. Deer might appear on the pass to the gate of their house. It seemed to me they were living in a park which showed a beautiful picture of spring. You could easily see they were not poor people.

Mary was a homemaker. But she was a very lazy woman even though she was fair and smart. The lady was more beautiful when she was in her bikini lying on the sand bank of the lake. Her mouth looked like a rose bud. She loved cashmere jackets or T-shirts from Italy. She liked all kinds of rings on her ears and fingers. She only knew (know) how to make up and shampoo her long hair but didn’t read the Holy Bible or any other books. She loved playing poker day and night. When it was raining or snowing, she took a taxi to go out to the mall. She never took a bus or walked. Mary never made food by herself. When she was hungry, she would (will) pick up the phone and call the bakery in the city and asked the baker there to bake some chocolate crackers for her. Some chocolate crackers, some ice cream, some salad, some mashed potato and a glass of Coca-cola or Pepsi could be a good meal for her. She loved eating those sweets. And she hated eating sandwiches, McDonald’s hamburgers, toast, bacon, meat chops or meatballs. After she ate those, she would become ill. Then she must take many pills.

Thanks to Jack’s salary, they could live that kind of romantic life. Jack woke (wake) up when it was dark outside in the morning. Mary woke up late every morning. She merely lay (lie) in her bed with a blanket for a long time before she went (go) to do housework. It seemed to her that Jack was her slave. One afternoon, because of the typhoon, Jack’s car fell (fall) off the high way and crashed into a big tree. The car was towed away because it couldn’t be geared anymore. Besides a scar showed up on Jack’s forehead, the doctor didn’t find any real problems after Jack was x-rayed.

What is the longest word in English(英语中最长的单词是什么)? 谜底是 smiles(微笑)。
